Criminal Background Checks

Three of four victims are female. One predator can have scores of victims.

North American Youth Sport Institute offers a new program to make youth sport and all other youth activities more safe by screening volunteers and other adult leaders for violations that could risk harm to children. For a fee, we will research all volunteers and paid staff, and conduct background checks on new volunteers and staff as they become part of the program. Click on "Safe on First" banner for more information at http://www.naysi.com or email Jack@naysi.com.

Ask Jack: What does research say about the effectiveness of the camcorder? Vicenzo on 4/15/04

Jack sez: A very import aspect of learning is feedback. The sooner the feedback occurs in relation to the event, the more effective it becomes. Video can provide instant undeniable feedback in a teaching environment, particularly when it can be compared to desirable performance.

For example, in baseball, shoot 60 to 90 seconds of video of a pitcher concentrating on one phase of the delivery such as the fastball. It may be necessary to tape the delivery from the front, both sides, and at an angle to be most revealing. The camera angle is important.

Then view the video with the player pointing out the good points and what needs correction. For younger players who tend to make a variety of errors, concentrate on the good points and perhaps one facet that needs correction. Remember, it is difficult to change several things at one time. Older and more experienced players may be able to focus on two or three points to correct at the same time.

When viewing the video, point out the changes when successful. Take another minute or two of video. Then view the video again. Video does not lie and does not show your personal biases. This will help speed up the learning process.

Take A Cue From Politics

By Jack Hutslar

Are you interested in building enrollment in your youth sport program, both players and volunteers? Then it is time to take a cue from the 2004 politicians. Look at the Democrat primary campaign season and the presidential campaign. Democrats have been able to get major media coverage without expending much effort and money. Candidates simply announce that they will make a campaign speech. It is interesting that the candidates have delivered the same core messages over and over. It seems like nothing new is ever offered. Yet the media reports the remarks of these politicians as if these were novel ideas. Amazing, is it not.

Take this concept and your story to your community. Line up monthly speaking engagements with the churches, schools, businesses, business clubs and social organizations in your area. Tell them your story. Tell your audiences about your volunteers, students who have done well. Mention the latest human interest story. Then tell them about your current needs and future plans. Leave your fliers and business cards so they will know how to contact you or tell their acquaintances how to contact you.

I must offer one precautionary note. As you may know, politicians are not under any obligation to tell the truth. Do not, under any circumstances, allow this to be a feature of your presentations.

Telling your story over and over will bring your organization to the forefront among local youth service organizations. Your success at making regular presentations will benefit the youngsters you are serving in ways that will surprise you.

A Billion

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but an advertising agency put that figure into perspective in one of its releases:

  • A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
  • A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
  • A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
  • A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate Washington spends it.

Need A Dodgeball Hit!

What do you think of the Randy Johnson Right Guard commercial where Dodgeball is the vehicle for delivering a message about perspiration? I laughed until tears came down my cheeks. However, I am sure that the non-competition police, if they watch TV, found it totally offensive. For a replay of the dodgeball debate [sometimes spelled dodge ball], readers can check out the following link to see what people in the field think about this largely harmless game.

September 2004 is Youth Soccer Month

Recognizing the impact and importance the sport of soccer plays in the day-to-day lives of America's families, US Youth Soccer, the nation's largest youth sports association, is spearheading the annual Youth Soccer Month - Celebrating Soccer in America, in September.

Throughout Youth Soccer Month, a series of messages will be highlighted to illustrate "Celebrating Soccer in America." Each week a different message will be the focus of communication and programming.  The "pillars" of Youth Soccer Month are:

  • Fitness
  • Friendship
  • Family
  • Participation

Youth Soccer Month will also highlight the various programs available to children interested in participating in soccer, including the inner city, special needs, recreational and elite soccer programs that have facilitated the growth of the sport at all levels. To learn more about Youth Soccer Month visit their web site at http://www.usyouthsoccer.org

Jack sez: What month have you identified to celebrate your youth sport or school sport program.

A Cardiologist Says . . . Cough

Let's say it's 6.15 pm and you are driving home (alone of course), after an unusually hard day on the job. You are really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you do not know if you will be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.

HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help. The person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.
