Criminal Background Checks

North American Youth Sport Institute offers a new program to make youth sport and all other youth activities more safe by screening volunteers and other adult leaders for violations that could risk harm to children. For a fee, we will research all volunteers and paid staff, and conduct background checks on new volunteers and staff as they become part of the program. Click on "Safe on First" banner for more information at http://www.naysi.com or email Jack@naysi.com.

Ask Jack: I see you have many ties to NC. Do you have any thoughts on the possible ACC expansion? It is pretty obvious that this is clearly a business decision, and I am one who is disheartened by the ever increasing "business" aspect of non-professional sports. When the programs and the athletes themselves become business pawns, I believe we may have finally crossed the line. Like many others, I do not hold the answers to how it can get better (in my eyes, at least). S.M. on 6/15/2003

Jack sez: The ACC expansion provides some ideas for youth programs. As a rule, conference and league affiliations are best when similar programs from roughly the same area are brought together under common rules. The ACC does not follow that currently as Duke and Wake Forest are not like the other schools apart from geographic considerations. They are also unlike the others universities in size and academic standards.

When expanding, the ACC commissioner has stated in a meeting I attended that it should include new market areas. Syracuse, Boston College and Miami fit that criterion but not Virginia Tech. Rutgers would fit the bill. It brings in a real Atlantic coast school in a new state with an enrollment comparable to Duke and Wake Forest.

From a scheduling point of view, it is good to have an even number of universities. For instance, a 12 or 14 team league means that all teams can play football on the same day. With 11 or 13 teams, one team will need to play an outside university. That odd number also causes the tournament scheduler to add a play-in game as the ACC now do in basketball.

Even is better than odd. Close is better than far. Similar is better than dissimilar. Economics is a value judgment but conference affiliations should not stress the resources of individual members.

NAYSInote: My webmaster tells me that we have over 500 questions answered in Ask Jack and another 200 FAQs. The FAQs tend to be sport oriented and are loaded with answers about rules, dimensions and skills. Search for topics at the NAYSI Site Search.

Letter from camp

It is that time when parents ship their kids off to camp for a week or more. The following letter is amusing and hopefully, does not represent the events you are in store for this summer.

Dear Mom,

Our Scoutmaster told us to write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and are worried. We are OK. Only one of our tents and 2 sleeping bags got washed away.

Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Chad when it happened. Oh yes, please call Chad's mother and tell her he is OK. He can't write because of the cast.

I got to ride in one of the search and rescue jeeps. It was neat. We never would have found him in the dark if it hadn't been for the lightning.

Our Scoutmaster Walt got mad at Chad for going on a hike alone without telling anyone. Chad said he DID tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably didn't hear him. Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas can will blow up? The wet wood didn't burn, but one of the tents did. Also some of our clothes. David is going to look weird until his hair grows back.

We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Walt gets the car fixed. It wasn't his fault about the wreck. The brakes worked OK when we left. Scoutmaster Walt said that a car that old you have to expect something to break down; that's probably why he can't get insurance. We think it's a neat car. He doesn't care if we get it dirty, and if it's hot, sometimes he lets us ride on the fenders. It gets pretty hot with 10 people in a car. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the highway patrolman stopped and talked to us.

Scoutmaster Walt is a neat guy. He is a good driver. In fact, he is teaching Terry how to drive on the mountain roads where there isn't any traffic. All we ever see up there are logging trucks.

This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out in the lake. Scoutmaster Walt wouldn't let me because I can't swim, and Chad was afraid he would sink because of his cast, so he let us take the canoe across the lake. It was great. You can still see some of the trees under the water from the flood.

Scoutmaster Walt isn't crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn't even get mad about losing the life jackets. He has to spend a lot of time working on the car so we are trying not to cause him any trouble.

Guess what? We have all passed our first aid merit badges. When Dave dove in the lake and cut his arm, we got to see how a tourniquet works. Wade and I threw up, but Scoutmaster Walt said it probably was just food poisoning from the leftover chicken. He said they got sick that way with food they ate in prison. I'm so glad he got out and became our scoutmaster. He said he sure figured out how to get things done better while he was doing his time. By the way, what is a pedophile?

I have to go now. We are going to town to mail our letters and buy bullets. Don't worry about anything. We are fine. Love, Cole

P.S. How long has it been since I had a tetanus shot?
